Texas Schools Budget Deficit

Democratic leaders urged Governor Greg Abbott to call a legislative session to address the “urgent need to improve school finance.” Texas’ largest school districts are facing budget deficits, leading to teacher and staff cuts. Democrats blame this on the legislature’s failure to increase basic funding for public schools last session. Big Spring ISD Superintendent Jay McWilliams noted his district’s budget is stable but stressed that Abbott shouldn’t ignore the statewide crisis or mislead about the legislature’s failure to pass increased school funding. Although increased funding has not passed and likely won’t before school resumes in August, Superintendent McWilliams said his district is in really good shape.
